The Bulletproof Diet was first introduced back in 2014 by former technology executive turned biohacking guru, Dave Asprey. Also known as DIY (do-it-yourself) biology, biohacking is known as the practice of making changes to one’s lifestyle in order to make the body function better and more efficiently.
Asprey is one of the most successful entrepreneurs of his generation, but he also weighed more than 300 lbs by his mid-20’s and felt like he was out of touch with his own personal health. His New York Times bestselling book, “The Bulletproof Diet” talks about the 15-year journey that he went through to lose weight and improve his health all without adhering to any of the traditional diets available.
He claims that anyone can follow the same things that he went through and get similar results as well. According to Asprey, the Bulletproof Diet as an anti-inflammatory program that promotes peak performance and rapid weight loss.
How the Diet Works
The Bulletproof Diet can be classified as a cyclical keto diet, which is a modified version of the popular keto diet. The diet consists of eating foods that are low in carbs and high in fat for 5 to 6 days a week with 1 to 2 carb refeed days. During the keto days, one should aim to get at least 75% of his calories from fat, and 25% from carbs.
Doing this will put in a state of ketosis which is a natural process wherein your body burns fat instead of carbs and turns it to energy. During the carb refeed days, eating squash, white rice and sweet potatoes is highly recommended as it helps increase your daily carb intake from 50 grams to approximately less than 300.
Asprey says the purpose of carb refeed days is to help keep the negative side effects of long-term keto diets at bay. Examples of negative side effects that have been linked to long term keto diets include kidney stones and constipation.
The core or foundation of the Bulletproof Diet is Bulletproof Coffee. This is coffee that has been mixed with unsalted, grass-fed butter and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil. Asprey says that starting off the day with this hot beverage will boost mental clarity, energy and suppress your hunger.
Doing intermittent fasting can complement this diet quite well because of how it can provide your body with energy minus all the crashes and slumps. But it is unclear what Asprey’s definition of intermittent fasting really is because he says you should start each day with a cup of Bulletproof Coffee.
Does It Help You Lose Weight?
There are currently no studies that examine the effects of the Bulletproof Diet with regards to weight loss. But research indicates that there is no specific single best diet that can help one lose weight. Keto diets have also been shown to help people lose weight quickly compared to other diets. However, some studies suggest that the difference in weight loss is disappearing as time goes on.
Experts agree that the best weight loss indicator is one’s ability to follow a reduced-calorie diet for a sustained length of time. With that said, the Bulletproof Diet’s effectiveness on weight loss will depend largely on the number of calories you take in each day and how long you’ll be able to sustain it.
The high fat content of keto diets will allow you to lose weight quickly and eat less because they are considered to be quite filling. The Bulletproof diet has no calorie restrictions which suggests that one will be able to reach a healthy weight limit eating Bulletproof food only.
However, weight loss is not as simple as it sounds because your weight is influenced by many different factors. These factors include behaviour, genetics, and physiology. Therefore, you should never solely rely on your food intake regardless of how “Bulletproof” your diet may be. You should still make a conscious effort on your end to lower down your calorie consumption.
If you do plan to go with the Bulletproof Diet you will need to follow it long term so it can work. This can be a little challenging for some people, so it isn’t recommended for those who have trouble reducing their caloric intake.
